If there’s one thing I’ve learned in over 12 years of entrepreneurship, it’s this: the path to external success starts internally. My Story: From External Success to Internal Realization

Years ago, I built what looked like a wildly successful business. I had a full in-person team of employees and was making $35K a month. From the outside, everything seemed like it was working.

But the truth? I was miserable behind the scenes.

I was waking up in the early hours and answering my email before the sun came up—because why not give the sunrise a run for its money? I felt like I was working around the clock just to keep things from falling apart, juggling a million things at once. I was white-knuckling it, doing everything I could to stay in control.

It worked, certainly, but the long-term effects of running my business this way left me constantly overwhelmed and anxious. And even though I’d achieved some of my biggest goals, I wasn’t fulfilled in my business and knew something had to change for me to avoid a burnout so epic, it would be the stuff of cautionary startup tales.

I tried all the conventional solutions—therapy, self-help books, business coaching. But nothing seemed to help. I kept thinking if I could just fix the business systems or get more clients, I’d feel better. But it wasn’t until I started doing energy work that I realized the problem wasn’t the business. The problem was me.

My business was a reflection of my own internal struggles. It was run by my need for external validation, my habit of letting other people’s opinions shape my vision, and my disconnection from my own soul’s purpose. I had built something that looked good on paper but was totally out of alignment with what I actually wanted. It wasn’t until I did the inner work that I could see how deeply my energy was impacting my business. And that’s when everything started to shift.

The Shift: Recognizing "Hustle and Survive" Mode

One of the biggest realizations I had during this journey came later when I hired my first manager. I was ready to step back from managing the day-to-day so I could focus on higher-level growth and finally get the fulfillment I was looking for. It felt like my business was ready for it too.

I even kept the cork from the champagne we popped to celebrate, writing “time to thrive” on it in Sharpie to remind me of my new goals. I thought this was the beginning of real work-life balance.

But it didn’t go as planned. Training my manager took months, which I expected. To add to the problems, I had taken on clients that were a stretch for my team, thinking we needed to keep growing, but it only pushed our systems and processes to the breaking point. As time went on, the mistakes my team made got bigger and harder to fix.

Looking back, I can see I was still stuck in “hustle and survive” mode, operating from a place of fear. Even though we didn’t need to take on those clients financially, I kept pushing us beyond what we were ready for.

There was no amount of seeing my cork on my desk, reminding me of my new goals, that would change that. The energy I was carrying that was focused on fear, control, and survival was showing up in the business. I discovered that until I could shift that, things would just keep getting worse.
